Automated Microscopy 2016 – Registration Open

Automated Microscopy 2016 – Registration Open

Early Bird registration is now open for Automated Microscopy 2016, a cross disciplinary meeting suitable for all experience levels, looking at the current developments and application of automated microscopy technology to research and industry. This conference is organised by the Royal Microscopy Society and James Strongman, director of Petrolab Ltd and iMin Solutions. It is sponsored by the Department of Earth Sciences, University of OxfordMinerals Engineering International, Zeiss MicroscopyNikon UK Ltd and Hitachi High Technologies.

The invited speakers have been selected from academia and industry covering four primary areas:

  • Mining – Will Goodall (iMin Solutions and MinAssist), Will Brownscombe (Natural History Museum) & Gawen Jenkin (University of Leicester)
  • Oil and Gas – Alan Butcher (FEI), Peter Wellsbury (CGG Robertson) & Richard Worden (Richard Worden, University of Liverpool)
  • Forensics/Automotive/Aviation – Christian Lang (Oxford Instruments), Patrick Quinn (UCL Inst of Archaeology) & Duncan Pirrie (Helford Geoscience)
  • Construction/Concrete – Maarten Broekmans (Geological Survey of Norway), Hong Wong (Imperial College, London) & Loic Courtois (3Dmagination Ltd)

The speakers will cover a wide range of acquisition techniques, applications and workflows. This will give a valuable insight into how and why solutions have been developed and also spark innovation across these and other industries. The meeting will give a great chance to look over the hedge and see how the various industries are utilising the latest developments in microscopy and correlative workflows to provide more powerful datasets and deeper understanding of their samples.

The full program and list of talks are available here.

DATE & VENUE: Wednesday 7th September – Department of Earth Sciences, Oxford University

Workshop: Operational mineralogy – enabling data driven decision making in minerals processing

Following the disciplinary meeting is a workshop run by Dr Will Goodall, iMin Solutions & MinAssist, Dr Ben Tordoff, Zeiss and Mr James Strongman, iMin Solutions & Petrolab looking at Operational Mineralogy. If you have registered for the Automated Microscopy Meeting you can opt to attend this workshop on Thursday 8 September.

In mineral processing, operations tend to almost exclusively rely on chemical assays to monitor the health of the process and make day-to-day decisions.  This often means that decisions are made based on only one part of the puzzle and the ability to accurately identify issues and efficiently address them is compromised.  With lower grade and more complex resources becoming the norm it is becoming even more important to utilise all the tools available to maximise productivity and ensure that avoidable metal losses aren’t occurring.

The workshop will look at a staged implementation of an iMin operational mineralogy program from feasibility to handover of the system and ongoing data management.

Areas covered;

  • Site Suitability
  • Sample Preparation
  • Installation and training
  • Data interpretation Implementation of continuous improvement plan
  • Data validation and quality control
  • Opening the door to big data analytics and asset management.
